How to choose a freight forwarder

A freight forwarder is the company that organises the movement of your goods. They do not usually own the ships or planes, they book space with carriers, arrange the pickup and delivery, handle the customs paperwork, and coordinate the many moving parts of a shipment so you do not have to.

Think of them as the project manager for your cargo. A good one turns a complicated international journey into a single point of contact and a clear price. That is why choosing well matters so much.

• Experience on your lane. A forwarder who ships your route and your type of goods regularly will handle problems others have never seen.
• Proper licensing and network. Real forwarders have the agent networks and credentials to operate at both ends of the journey.
• Clear, itemised pricing. A quote should break down freight, handling, customs, and delivery, not hide everything in one vague number.
• Responsiveness. When cargo is delayed, you need answers quickly. Test how fast they reply before you commit.
• Customs expertise. Good forwarders know the paperwork and rules for your destination and stop problems before they happen.

A short conversation tells you a lot. Ask these:

• A quote that seems far too cheap. The missing costs usually reappear later as surprise charges.
• Vague, one-line pricing with no breakdown.
• Slow or evasive answers before you are even a customer, it rarely improves after.
• No clear customs process for your destination country.
• Pressure to decide immediately without giving you time to compare.
